My New HD TiVo vs CableCard installation (Time Warner)

Yes! Finally upgraded the good ole TiVo to a brand new HD version, records 2 channels at once and has 2 slots for cable cards so I can finally join the world of digital tv. Not that I need to watch anymore tv, but hey, it’s there and actually lowered my cable bill.

So a CableCard is supposed to make life easier, no cable box, just slide these devices that look like laptop PCMCIA cards into the front of the TiVo and it magically gets digital reception. I asked them, since I am technically savy, to just mail me the card/cards and I think I can do the rest from there. They insisted on sending a technician to install them. I said fine.

Currently, we are starting hour 2 of this technician sitting on my floor, not knowing what to do. He put the cable cards in, called in to HQ to activate them, and is currently still sitting around waiting for my TiVo to update. Personally, I think that since the government mandated that ALL cable companies needed to provide a CableCard for users to avoid a monopoly on the set top box, they purposely make them not work correctly with my TiVo so that I’ll buy their DVR. NO THANK YOU!

I love my TiVo! All cable provided DVR’s I’ve seen are not nearly as user-friendly as my TiVo, and I can schedule shows online, transfer videos to and from my computers, listen to music on the home stereo system and record 2 channels at once. Oh, and I have my lifetime subscription transferred over.

I’m about to take the remote from this “technician”… Just did… wow, I think I got it working. I could be an installer for Time Warner. Seriously, this guy had no idea how to install the CableCard onto my TiVo. He would have sat there on my floor all day.

I have things to do here, and can’t sit around all day like him and wait for my cable to come up, like blog… Thankfully, I can do that while he’s here. 12:35pm now…

Edit: 1:00pm update… it did not work. The tech took the cable cards back. I told him I thought it was not in Time Warners’ interest to have them work since they want me to buy their DVR. He agreed totally, took the CableCards back and told me to make a new appointment, which I’m not sure if I will do. Now it looks like the regular cable does not work anymore. Starting to piss me off.
