Insteon Android App

So I decided to make a custom app for controlling my Insteon lights in my house with Google’s App Inventor for Android.

More details to come.  Here is an early screen shot:

I am planning on putting this in the Android Market as soon as they allow apps from App Inventor in.  I’ll try getting a beta out before then.  Check back soon.

It works by doing internet calls to the SmartLinc network via ethernet.  I’m planning on having it control my air conditioning so when I come close to my house, it automatically cools down the place.    Something with Google’s Latitude, most likely.

Updated to control my Thermostat modules:

Edit 12/8/2010:

I now have a few apps in the App Marketplace.  This one will probably go up sometime this weekend.  I have the temperature sensors working for thermostats, and full control of my lights.

Its on the market as a beta app now, download  Controid now!

Hi, I am the EVP of a regional Cellular company. About a year ago I met with the team at Smarthome and suggested they create an app like the iPhone app to run smartlinc. They said they would wait for someone to do it. Looks like you have. Even though I have attended the Google Developer conference I/O the past 2 years I am not a developer so I am not sure what you mean when you say ‘apps from App Inventor’. If your app works well I am sure I can talk to some of my contacts at Smarthome to link and promote the app. I am not sure what role we could play with the market but I could also talk to my own team to see how we could help get your app up on the market.

I have a question for you: Did you have to use SmartHome’s SDK to communicate with your Insteon components? Did you have to get the Insteon controller or only the components themselves? If you could tell us some more about your particular setup, that would be extremely helpful.

Also, I do some hobby programming for Android if you want any help building it as code instead of using the App Inventor, but I’m glad to see that some people are using the App Inventor.

“” Something with Google’s Latitude, most likely.””

Nah. Look at “TASKER” for android — you’ll probably love it.

What commands are you using to send to your SmartLinc? I got one of those and currently just use their address of smartlinc.smarthome.com to get into my system but on Evo 4g the java webpage loads very slowly. Do you happen to have an .apk that you can I can use? My evo is rooted btw.

    Rob,
Would love to see this in action; looking for a tester?
    John.

Any way I could use/try your Insteon App for Android? Using the browser to control my lights is way too slow & clunky on these phones. Smarthome tech suppourt just says… “we are working on an App” but who knows what that means or if it will ever materialize. Your App looks perfect for mine & im sure many others. I would absolutely offer a donation thru PayPal for your App.
Email me back if so. Thank you, Dan

I’m trying to create a custom app for myself too. Did you have to write any custom components in java to help the app communicate with the smartlinc controller?

Looks great, is it in the marketplace yet?

I have been looking for Android app to control Insteon. When do you think that this will be posted in the Android Market?

  11. Devin Serpa says:

What’s the name of your app?

  12. Joel says:

Looks great, I am looking for an app like this. How can I get it?

  13. Shannon says:

Are you still planning on releasing this to the marketplace?

  14. Tod Price says:

I took a different approach, but would be glad to share what I have learned.

My approach is based on a ruby daemon running on a linux box. The daemon handles all the Insteon events, status etc. It is then presented on my Droid 2 via a Browser interface.

I do not have Insteon applications, but I am planning to buy the SmartLinc application modules. Do you know if the API can control the application modules?

Wow! This is what we have all been waiting for. How is your progress? PLEASE keep working on it!
